The Gel Kayano 33 is Asics at its most reassuring: a premium stability running shoe built to log big, comfortable miles while keeping your stride honest when you tire. It is a max-comfort support trainer, not a speed tool. At 298g with a 39mm heel and 8mm drop, this is a lot of shoe, and it feels it underfoot in the best way. The FF Blast Plus Eco midsole is soft but composed, and the FluidSupport system replaces the old plastic guidance wall with a firmer, adaptive foam that steadies your ankle without shouting about it. In our view that is the story here: a stability shoe you forget is a stability shoe. It sits at the top of Asics' support range on price, and the £191 RRP is a real ask. If you want the same lineage for less, the Kayano 32 still does most of this. But for daily easy runs and long efforts where you want protection and quiet guidance, the 33 is one of the most complete support trainers on the road.
The Arahi 8 is Hoka's lightweight stability trainer, and it is one of the least intrusive support shoes you can buy. Instead of a firm medial post jammed under your arch, it uses a J-Frame of firmer foam that runs down the inside and wraps the heel, so the guidance is there when your form gets sloppy but stays quiet when it doesn't. At 259g with a tall 39.4mm heel, it manages to feel light and stable at the same time, which is rare in this category. This is a daily training shoe for runners who want a bit of a hand keeping their stride honest over the miles, not a plush max-cushion cruiser and not a firm posted tank. The ride is even and reliable rather than exciting, which is exactly what most stability runners want. If you have logged miles in a Brooks Adrenaline or an Asics GT-2000 and found them heavy, the Arahi 8 is the light, modern answer.
Putting two running shoes side by side shows the trade-offs quickly, but which one suits you still depends on how you run. Weight and stack height set the feel underfoot. A lighter shoe with a lower stack feels quick and nimble, and a heavier shoe with a taller stack gives a softer, more protective ride over long miles. Drop matters too: the lower the heel-to-toe drop, the more work your calves and Achilles do.
Prices come from the UK retailers we check every day. Best price now is the cheapest current price we can link you to. The 90-day low shows how cheap the shoe has been lately, and the 30-day average tells you whether today's price is a real drop or just what it usually sells for. If neither shoe is at a price you like yet, open its page and set a price alert. We'll email you when it falls.
