Our verdict
The Vaporfly 3 is Nike's carbon racing shoe for runners who want to go fast without the towering stack of an Alphafly. It is a pure road racer, built for 5k up to the marathon, and it does that one job very well. At 194g it is light, the 8mm drop keeps you rolling forward, and the carbon plate gives you real pop when you commit to race pace. This is not a shoe for plodding. It rewards a quick, efficient stride and comes alive the harder you push. If you have run in earlier Vaporflys you will know the feeling: fast, slightly twitchy, and unmistakably a tool for race day. The newer Vaporfly 4 refines the formula, but the 3 remains a serious marathon shoe, and when it drops below RRP it is one of the better-value carbon racers you can buy. We rate it for runners who already have a daily trainer and want a dedicated PB weapon.

Fit & sizing
The Vaporfly 3 fits close and true to size for most runners, with a snug, race-day feel rather than a roomy everyday one. The forefoot is on the narrow side, so wider feet may find it tight across the ball of the foot, and the thin upper does not stretch much to help. Midfoot lockdown is good and the heel holds securely without much padding, which is normal for a shoe this stripped back. We would order your usual running shoe size. If you are between sizes or have a high-volume foot, sizing up a half is the safer call, since there is little give in the upper. Try them on later in the day when your feet have swollen, the way they will mid-race. Wear thin racing socks rather than thick cushioned ones to get the lockdown the shoe is designed around.
Performance breakdown
Ride & feel
Quick and propulsive. The Vaporfly 3 wants tempo and race pace, and that is where the carbon plate and bouncy foam click into one smooth, rolling motion. Get on your toes and it snaps you through toe-off with genuine return. Slow down to an easy jog and the magic fades, the ride turns slightly firm and unsettled, and the shoe feels like it is waiting for you to speed up. That is by design. This is a racer, not a cruiser. Over a half or full marathon the energy return holds up well and your legs stay fresher than they would in a flat trainer. Hold race pace and it comes alive.
Cushioning
There is plenty of soft, lightweight foam underfoot for a shoe this fast, and it does a good job of taking the sting out of the road over long miles. It leans bouncy rather than plush, so you feel the ground more than you would in a max-cushion daily trainer, but that connection is part of what makes it feel fast. Protection is strong at speed, when your footstrike is quick and light. At slower paces the cushioning can read as a little firm and unsettled. For its intended job, holding a hard effort over 13.1 or 26.2 miles, the balance of softness and pop is well judged.
Stability
Like most carbon super-shoes, the Vaporfly 3 is built for efficiency, not stability. The foam is soft and the platform sits high, so it can feel tippy at slower paces or when you are tired and your form starts to drift. There is no medial post or structured support here, and it is a neutral shoe through and through. At race pace, with a quick turnover, it settles and feels planted enough. But heavier heel-strikers or runners who need a guided ride should treat it with care, especially late in a marathon. If you want carbon-shoe speed with a steadier base, look at the wider stablemate Alphafly 3.
Upper & comfort
The upper is thin, light and breathable, built to keep weight down rather than coddle your foot. On race day with thin socks it disappears, which is exactly what you want. There is minimal padding around the collar and tongue, so you feel the structure of the shoe more than in a cushioned trainer, and the snug forefoot can press on wider feet over long distances. Breathability is excellent, a real plus for warm-weather racing, though the open mesh offers little protection from rain or cold. For its purpose it is comfortable enough, but this is a stripped-back race upper, not a soft daily one.
