The Fresh Foam X 1080v13 is New Balance's plush daily training shoe, a max-cushion running shoe built to soak up the miles rather than chase a personal best. At 285g with a 6mm drop it is not light, but that is not the point. This is the shoe you reach for on easy days, long runs and recovery jogs when you want a soft, forgiving ride and a bit of luxury underfoot. The Fresh Foam X midsole is on the softer, bouncier end of the daily-trainer scale, and the knit upper is one of the most comfortable New Balance has made. It is a neutral shoe with no plate and no stability posting, so it leans into cushioned comfort over speed. If you want a do-everything cushioned trainer for steady mileage, we rate it highly. Just know that the newer 1080v14 has since taken over the line, so v13 is often the smarter buy on price.
The 1080v13 fits true to size for most runners, so order your usual New Balance size. New Balance has long been one of the better brands for runners who need room, and the 1080 is a big part of why. The forefoot and toe box are generous without feeling sloppy, which suits wider feet and runners who like their toes to splay on long runs. Midfoot lockdown is secure through the engineered knit, and the heel hold is good with a padded, structured collar that stops slippage. Best of all, New Balance offers the 1080v13 in multiple width fittings (standard D, wide 2E and narrow B in many colourways), so if you have struggled to find a cushioned trainer that fits, this is one to try. Most runners stay true to size. If you are between sizes or plan to use it mainly for long runs when feet swell, half a size up is a safe call.
The ride is soft, smooth and forgiving. Fresh Foam X in this generation is one of the plusher daily-trainer foams around, so landings feel cushioned and the transition through the gait is easy and rolling rather than snappy. This is a shoe that rewards relaxed, steady running. Drop the pace to easy or long-run effort and it feels like it was built for exactly that. Push it to tempo and it starts to feel its weight and softness, with less of the pop you would get from a firmer or plated shoe. There is no carbon plate here, so do not expect it to spring you forward. What you get instead is a comfortable, protective platform that stays pleasant deep into a long run, which is exactly what most runners want from their highest-mileage shoe.
Cushioning is the whole story of this shoe, and it delivers. The Fresh Foam X midsole is generous and soft, giving you plenty of protection between your legs and the road on long, slow miles. It leans soft rather than firm, so heavier impacts are nicely absorbed and the shoe stays comfortable when you are tired and your form is starting to fade. That softness is a real asset for recovery days and marathon-distance long runs, where cushioning that lasts matters more than snap. The trade-off is that a very soft, tall platform can feel slightly less stable and less responsive at faster paces. For its intended job, easy and long running, the cushioning hits the sweet spot of protective without feeling dead or mushy.
The 1080v13 is a neutral shoe, so there is no medial post, no guide rails and no dedicated stability structure. Support comes only from the shape of the midsole and the secure upper. For neutral runners and mild overpronators, the wide, cushioned platform provides a reassuring base on easy miles. That said, the soft, fairly tall Fresh Foam X stack can feel a touch tippy for runners who need real corrective support, particularly when fatigued at the end of a long run. If you know you need stability features, look at a dedicated stability trainer such as the instead. For everyone else, the neutral setup is fine and keeps the ride smooth and natural.

The upper is a highlight. The engineered knit is soft, breathable and stretches to accommodate the foot without hot spots, which is why the 1080 has such a loyal following among runners who value comfort. There is a plush, padded tongue and heel collar that add to the premium feel, and the whole package wraps the foot without pinching. Breathability is good for most conditions, though a knit this cosy runs a little warm on the hottest summer days. Step-in comfort is excellent, the kind that makes the shoe feel broken in from the first run. Combined with the multiple width options, it is one of the most accommodating and comfortable uppers in the daily-trainer class.
