The Nike Dragonfly 2 is a distance track spike, built for the 1500m up to the 10,000m rather than the flat-out sprints. Underfoot you get a slab of ZoomX foam paired with a Pebax propulsion plate, so it feels far closer to a super racing shoe than the bare, punishing spikes of a decade ago. That is the whole idea. You keep the light, locked-in, aggressive feel of a track spike, but the ZoomX gives you a little forgiveness so your legs are not shredded over a longer effort. At 145g it is genuinely light, and the 0mm drop with a low 19mm stack keeps you right down on the track for a fast, connected feel. This is a race-day tool, not a training shoe. If your event is 1500m and longer and you want a distance spike that lets you hold pace when it hurts, the Dragonfly 2 is one of the most trusted options out there. Sprinters and 800m specialists will want Nike's more aggressive Air Zoom Victory 2 instead.
The Vaporfly 3 is Nike's carbon racing shoe for runners who want to go fast without the towering stack of an Alphafly. It is a pure road racer, built for 5k up to the marathon, and it does that one job very well. At 194g it is light, the 8mm drop keeps you rolling forward, and the carbon plate gives you real pop when you commit to race pace. This is not a shoe for plodding. It rewards a quick, efficient stride and comes alive the harder you push. If you have run in earlier Vaporflys you will know the feeling: fast, slightly twitchy, and unmistakably a tool for race day. The newer Vaporfly 4 refines the formula, but the 3 remains a serious marathon shoe, and when it drops below RRP it is one of the better-value carbon racers you can buy. We rate it for runners who already have a daily trainer and want a dedicated PB weapon.
Putting two running shoes side by side shows the trade-offs quickly, but which one suits you still depends on how you run. Weight and stack height set the feel underfoot. A lighter shoe with a lower stack feels quick and nimble, and a heavier shoe with a taller stack gives a softer, more protective ride over long miles. Drop matters too: the lower the heel-to-toe drop, the more work your calves and Achilles do.
Prices come from the UK retailers we check every day. Best price now is the cheapest current price we can link you to. The 90-day low shows how cheap the shoe has been lately, and the 30-day average tells you whether today's price is a real drop or just what it usually sells for. If neither shoe is at a price you like yet, open its page and set a price alert. We'll email you when it falls.
