Our verdict

The Metaspeed Sky Paris is ASICS at full race trim: a carbon racing shoe built for one job, chasing a personal best on the road. It is the cadence runner's racer, the half of the Metaspeed line tuned for runners who get faster by keeping their stride length and turning their legs over quicker, while the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo handles those who lengthen their stride. At 215g with a full-length carbon plate and a 5mm drop, it is light, aggressive and unmistakably a marathon shoe rather than a do-everything trainer. The bouncy, springy foam and stiff plate work together to roll you forward and reward a committed effort. Hold goal pace and it comes alive. Jog it easy and you will wonder what the fuss is about. In our view it sits right at the top of the carbon racing shoe pack alongside the Nike Vaporfly 4, and at £260 it is priced like the elite tool it is.

Who it suits

Who should buy it

  • Cadence runners chasing a road PB who keep stride length and turn their legs over fast
  • Marathon and half marathon racers who want maximum return at goal pace
  • Neutral runners with an efficient gait who race regularly
  • Experienced runners who already own a separate daily trainer for easy miles

Who should not buy it

  • You want one shoe for both easy runs and racing, as this is firm and flat when jogged
  • You need stability or pronation control, as this is a neutral racer with no support
  • You are a heavier heel-striker who would prefer a softer, more protective ride
  • Your budget will not stretch to a £260 single-purpose race shoe
  • You are a stride-lengthening runner, who may prefer the Metaspeed Edge instead

Extra information

Fit & sizing

The Metaspeed Sky Paris fits true to size for most runners, so order your usual ASICS race size and you should be fine. The fit is on the snug, performance side rather than roomy. The forefoot is reasonably accommodating for a racer but not generous, and the midfoot wraps close for a locked-in feel at speed. The heel hold is secure with very little slip once laced. The thin, breathable upper is built to be worn for a hard race effort with thin socks, not loose-fitting comfort, so if you sit between sizes or have a wider or higher-volume foot, going up half a size is the safer call. Try them on later in the day when your feet have spread. For a marathon you want enough room at the toes to allow for swelling over the closing miles, so check that you have a thumb's width up front before committing to race day.

Performance breakdown

Ride & feel

This is a propulsive, rolling ride that wants you to run fast. The combination of a springy foam and a full-length carbon plate gives a firm, snappy sensation underfoot that flicks you onto your toes and keeps the legs ticking over. It is smooth and stable through the gait at pace, with a clear forward roll rather than a soft, sink-in feel. The Sky is built around protecting your stride length, so it rewards a quick, efficient cadence more than a long, loping one. Drop the effort to an easy jog and the magic fades, the plate feels stiff and the ride a touch harsh, much like the Adidas Adios Pro 4. Push back up to threshold or race pace and the energy return arrives and the shoe feels alive under you. Over a full marathon it holds its pop well and keeps fatigue at bay deep into the closing miles.

Cushioning

There is a lot of foam underfoot for a shoe this light, and it is the lively, energetic kind rather than the plush, pillowy kind. It protects the legs over marathon distance while staying firm enough to feel fast, so you get late-race leg protection without losing the snap that makes a racer worth wearing. This is performance cushioning, tuned for return rather than comfort. If you want a softer, more forgiving daily ride for easy miles you should look elsewhere, because the Sky is firm by design and only really makes sense at pace. For racing and hard sessions, the balance of protection and responsiveness is excellent and it stays consistent right to the finish line.

Stability

This is a neutral racing shoe with no added support features, and like most carbon plate racers it sits tall off the ground. That said, the Sky is one of the more composed shoes in its class. The plate and the geometry give it a planted, predictable feel through footstrike and toe-off when you are running at pace, so it does not feel tippy the way some maximal racers can. Stability comes from speed here, not from structure. Run it slow or tired and the tall stack can feel less settled, and if you need genuine pronation control this is not the shoe for you. For a neutral runner with an efficient gait racing at goal pace, it holds the line well.

Upper & comfort

The upper is a thin, light, breathable race-day material built to disappear on your foot rather than coddle it. Airflow is good, which keeps your feet cool over a hot marathon, and the minimal construction keeps the weight down where it matters. Lockdown is secure once you dial in the lacing, with no notable hotspots for most runners at race effort. This is not a soft, padded, wear-it-all-day upper, and the tongue and collar are pared back to save grams. Worn with thin race socks for the distance it is built for, it is comfortable and does its job. Expect a performance feel, not a luxury one.

Common questions

FAQ

Yes, for most runners it fits true to size, so order your usual ASICS size. The fit is snug and performance-oriented rather than roomy, with a close midfoot wrap and secure heel. If you have a wider or higher-volume foot, or you want extra room at the toes for a marathon when your feet swell, going up half a size is the safer choice. Try them on later in the day and leave a thumb's width up front for race day.

Yes, this is one of the best carbon marathon shoes you can buy. It is light at 215g, the springy foam and full-length carbon plate deliver strong energy return at pace, and it holds its pop deep into the closing miles when your legs are tiring. It rewards a committed, goal-pace effort. It makes most sense for cadence-led runners racing the half or full marathon rather than for easy training runs.

ASICS builds two racers for two running styles. The Sky is tuned for cadence runners, those who get faster by keeping their stride length and turning their legs over quicker. The Metaspeed Edge Tokyo is built for stride runners, those who get faster by lengthening their stride. Both are light carbon racers at a similar level. Pick the Sky if you run fast by spinning your legs, and the Edge if you run fast by reaching further with each step.

Not really. It is a firm, single-purpose carbon racing shoe that only comes alive at pace, and at £260 it is a serious investment. New runners are better served by a cushioned, supportive daily trainer that handles easy miles comfortably. If you are new to running but determined to race, treat this as a dedicated race-day shoe and keep a softer daily trainer for the bulk of your mileage.

Like all carbon super-shoes, this is a race-day tool with a limited competitive lifespan rather than an everyday workhorse. The foam delivers its best return for a few hundred kilometres before the bounce starts to fade. To get the most from it, save it for races and key fast sessions and rotate a separate trainer for your easy and recovery runs. Treated that way it will see you through plenty of race days.

You can, but you will not enjoy it. The Sky is firm and the stiff carbon plate feels flat and a touch harsh at slow paces, so the energy return that makes it special only shows up at speed. It is also expensive to wear down on slow miles. We would keep it for racing and hard sessions and reach for a softer, cushioned daily trainer for easy and recovery running.
