Fordy Runs calls it a big step up from the first version, and the spec sheet backs that up. The Sonicblast 2 keeps the layout of the first version (FF Turbo Squared on top, FF Blast Max underneath, a Pebax plate between them) but the plate is now forked, and reviewers say it's noticeably lighter and bouncier than before. It's a plated super trainer for tempo sessions, marathon-pace long runs and the odd race, not a soft shoe for recovery days.
Doctors of Running graded it A-, and another review's three testers liked the ride too, though all of them found it firm at easy pace. The catch is price. At £170 RRP it sits right beside the Superblast 3, which is still the better choice if you want one shoe for easy days as well as fast ones. If most of your running is at tempo or marathon pace, the Sonicblast is the sharper of the two, and it gets easier to recommend once it drops below full price in the table.
The Mach X 3 is Hoka's do-it-all super trainer, the shoe you reach for when one pair has to cover the tempo session on Tuesday and the long run at the weekend. A Pebax plate sits inside a tall 44mm heel and 39mm forefoot stack, so you get a snappy, rolling ride without the harsh, race-only feel of a full carbon racing shoe. At 289g it is not light for the category, and you notice that on genuinely fast reps. What you get in return is versatility. It has enough cushioning to protect your legs over 20 miles and enough pop to hold marathon pace when you ask for it. Think of it as a workhorse with an extra gear rather than a pure speed tool. For runners who want a single plated trainer that does most jobs well, and who do not want to spend race-shoe money doing it, we rate the Mach X 3 highly. Just go in knowing it prioritises range over outright speed.
Putting two running shoes side by side shows the trade-offs quickly, but which one suits you still depends on how you run. Weight and stack height set the feel underfoot. A lighter shoe with a lower stack feels quick and nimble, and a heavier shoe with a taller stack gives a softer, more protective ride over long miles. Drop matters too: the lower the heel-to-toe drop, the more work your calves and Achilles do.
Prices come from the UK retailers we check every day. Best price now is the cheapest current price we can link you to. The 90-day low shows how cheap the shoe has been lately, and the 30-day average tells you whether today's price is a real drop or just what it usually sells for. If neither shoe is at a price you like yet, open its page and set a price alert. We'll email you when it falls.
