The Sonicblast 2 is ASICS building a super trainer for runners who want a bit of race-day energy on an ordinary Tuesday. It pairs FF Turbo Squared foam with an FF Blast Max base and a forked Pebax plate, so you get a bouncy, propulsive running shoe that still carries enough foam for long runs. With a 46mm heel and an 8mm drop it is a lot of shoe, yet at 242g it is light for that much stack. We see it as a do-it-all training partner: tempo sessions, long runs with marathon-pace blocks, and plenty of steady miles in between. The plate is Pebax, not carbon, which keeps the snap more forgiving than a race shoe and makes it easier to live with day to day. If you mostly run easy and want something simpler and cheaper, the Novablast 6 makes more sense. At £170 RRP it isn't cheap, so check the UK prices we track below before you buy.
Start with your usual ASICS size. Based on ASICS' recent Blast-family shoes, we expect most runners to be fine true to size, and nothing about the Sonicblast 2's design suggests you need to go up or down. Treat the toe box as standard rather than roomy until you have tried it on. If you have wide forefeet or bunions, try a pair before committing to a long run in it, or check whether a wide fit is listed at your retailer. With a 46mm heel, lockdown matters more than it would in a lower shoe. Take time over the lacing so your midfoot is held snugly and your heel stays put, especially on corners, and use a heel-lock lace if you already do on other shoes. For long runs, remember your feet swell, so aim for about a thumb's width of space in front of your longest toe. If your Gel Nimbus 28 fits well, the same size is the sensible starting point.
At easy pace the Sonicblast 2 is smooth and cushioned, with the plate encouraging a rolling stride rather than a flexible, natural feel. It's comfortable, but you can tell it wants to go faster. Pick up to tempo or marathon pace and it comes alive. The FF Turbo Squared foam and Pebax plate combine to give a bouncy, forward-moving ride that makes sustained efforts feel less taxing on your legs. Deep into a long run, the tall stack keeps you feeling fresher than a lower trainer would. It is less at home on sharp turns, tight track bends or very slow recovery shuffles, where the height and stiffness become more noticeable.
There is a lot of foam here. A 46mm heel and 38mm forefoot put the Sonicblast 2 firmly in high-stack territory, so you are well protected from the road even in big mileage weeks. It isn't a sink-in, marshmallow kind of softness, though. The FF Turbo Squared foam gives a springy, energetic sensation, while the FF Blast Max base adds a plusher layer underneath. The result is cushioning that protects you on long runs without dulling your pace. Heavier runners should find plenty of depth to work with, and the 8mm drop means heel strikers still land on a generous amount of foam.
The Sonicblast 2 is a neutral shoe with no dedicated stability features, so if you rely on support for overpronation, look elsewhere. That said, it feels steadier than the stack height suggests. The forked Pebax plate adds structure through the midsole, which helps stop that much foam from feeling wobbly when you land. Where you will notice the height is on corners, cambered pavements and uneven ground, where a lower shoe feels more planted. On straight roads at a steady rhythm it tracks well. If you need guidance for your daily miles, a stability trainer such as the is the better choice.

On a super trainer, the upper's job is secure, comfortable hold over long distances rather than shaving every last gram, and that is how we would judge it. On a shoe this tall, what matters most is how well it locks your foot onto the platform, so pay attention to lacing tension through the midfoot. A snug midfoot with a relaxed forefoot is the setting most runners will want. Comfort over two or three hours matters more than on a short session, so if you run long in warm weather, pair it with thin, moisture-wicking socks. As with any new shoe, give it a few shorter runs before a big effort.
