It is one of the better value picks for a new runner. The cushioning is soft and protective, the tall 10mm drop suits the heel-first landing most beginners default to, and the wide platform feels stable and reassuring. At around £100 it is also cheaper than most cushioned daily trainers, so it is a low-risk way to start building mileage. Just do not expect it to feel fast when you eventually want to run quicker.

We would not choose it for that. At 290g the Winflo 11 is heavy, and the midsole gives little energy return, so it feels flat and sluggish when you lift the pace. It can cover the distance of a marathon comfortably at an easy training pace, but for race day or faster sessions you want something lighter and more responsive. A livelier, cheaper option is the Puma Velocity Nitro 4, which has far more pop for tempo work.

The Winflo is Nike's budget daily trainer and the Pegasus is the step up. The Pegasus is lighter, more responsive and more versatile, with a livelier ride that copes better with faster running, but it costs more. The Winflo trades that pace and pop for a lower price and a simpler, softer everyday feel. If you only run easy miles, the Winflo saves you money. If you want one shoe that can also pick up the pace, the Pegasus is worth the extra.

Durability is one of its strengths. The outsole rubber and midsole are built for everyday training rather than lightweight racing, so the shoe holds up well over the sort of high mileage it is designed for. Most runners will get a full daily-trainer lifespan out of it, in the region of several hundred miles, before the cushioning starts to feel flat. For a shoe at this price, that longevity is a real plus.

It is a neutral shoe. There is no medial post or dedicated support structure, so it will not correct overpronation. That said, the wide, planted platform makes it feel more stable than many neutral trainers, so mild overpronators and neutral runners will find it secure. If you have been told you need proper support, choose a dedicated stability trainer instead, as the Winflo is not built to guide your gait.
