Speedgoat 7

On the trail the Speedgoat 7 feels planted and confident rather than fast and reactive. The new supercritical EVA is the story here. It is softer off the top than the old midsole but bounces back quicker, so you get a smoother, more forgiving ride that holds up better as the miles pile on. Pace is where it shows its hand. Cruise at an easy or steady effort and it flows beautifully over mixed ground. Push hard on smooth stretches and the tall, cushioned platform feels a touch vague, because this is a cruiser not a racer. The 5mm drop keeps you fairly low and neutral, and the rocker helps roll you through each stride. Over four, five, six hours on your feet, that forgiving feel is exactly what keeps your legs fresh.

Cushioning is the Speedgoat's whole reason for being, and the 7 delivers a deep, protective ride. With 37mm of stack under the heel there is plenty of foam between your feet and the trail, so sharp rocks and roots get soaked up rather than punching through. The supercritical EVA feels more resilient than the foam it replaces, holding its shape and pop deeper into long runs instead of packing down and going flat. It is not a soft marshmallow ride, more a substantial, supportive cushion that keeps working when you are tired. For long trail miles, ultras and rugged terrain where underfoot protection matters more than ground feel, this is about as much comfort as you will find without losing stability.

The Speedgoat 7 is a neutral shoe, so there is no medial post or dedicated support structure. What you get instead is passive stability from a wide, planted base and a supportive foam that does not collapse sideways when the ground tilts. On uneven trails that wide platform helps you stay upright through awkward foot plants and off-camber sections. The secure midfoot and firm heel counter add to the locked-in feel on descents. Tall stack shoes can feel tippy on very technical ground, and the Speedgoat manages this better than most thanks to that broad footprint. If you need genuine motion control for overpronation you will want a dedicated stability shoe, but for most trail runners this is a reassuringly steady ride.

The upper is built for the job: a breathable engineered mesh with just enough structure to hold your foot in place on technical ground. It drains and dries reasonably well after stream crossings and wet grass, which matters on long days. Overlays through the midfoot add security without hot spots, and the gusseted tongue keeps grit and debris out. The heel is well padded and the collar wraps cleanly, so there is no rubbing on long descents. It is a snug, performance-focused fit rather than a plush slipper, in keeping with the narrow last. Straight out of the box there is little break-in needed, so you can take them onto the trail on day one.
