Our verdict
The Tecton X 3 is Hoka's carbon-plated trail racing shoe, built for runners who want road-race pop on rough ground. At 252g it is remarkably light for a shoe with this much cushion under the foot, and the carbon plate gives you a real snap through toe-off when you are moving well. With a 5mm drop and an RRP of £220 it sits at the sharp, premium end of the trail market, squarely aimed at long-distance and ultra racing rather than everyday miles. This is a specialist. It rewards a runner who wants to hold pace over technical terrain and carry that efficiency deep into a race, when tired legs need every bit of help they can get. If you race trail ultras or fast half and full marathon distances off-road, it belongs on your shortlist. The nearest rival in our catalogue is the Nike Ultrafly, another plated trail racer chasing the same runner.

Extra information
Fit & sizing
The Tecton X 3 fits true to size for most runners, so order your normal Hoka trail length. The fit leans performance-focused: a secure midfoot and a heel that locks in well, which is exactly what you want when you are picking a line at pace on a descent. The toe box is on the moderate side rather than generous, so if you have wide feet or expect a lot of forefoot swelling on a long ultra, size up a half. Lockdown over the midfoot is snug and race-ready, holding the foot still through off-camber sections and sharp turns. Runners who prefer a roomier, more relaxed trail fit for all-day comfort may find this too racy, and would be better served by something like the Speedgoat 7. Try both on if you can. For racing, we would keep the fit snug rather than leaving extra room.
Performance breakdown
Ride & feel
The ride is fast and propulsive, with the carbon plate doing most of the talking once you are up to pace. Hold a strong effort and you feel the shoe drive you forward through toe-off, the sort of return that keeps you honest late in a long race. It is not a soft, sink-in trail cruiser. The plate gives the platform a purposeful, slightly firm energy that wants to be pushed. At easy jog pace it feels a little muted and stiff, as most plated racers do. This shoe comes alive when you commit to the effort. Over undulating terrain the light weight is a genuine advantage, and your legs will thank you for it on the climbs.
Cushioning
There is plenty of stack under the foot for a shoe this light, and that cushion is what lets the Tecton X 3 protect your legs deep into an ultra. It reads as a well-cushioned racer rather than a plush daily trainer: the foam is tuned to work with the plate, so it feels controlled and responsive underfoot rather than pillowy. That balance is the point. You get enough protection to take the sting out of long rocky descents, without the mushy, unstable feel that too much soft foam brings on technical ground. Over marathon and ultra distance the protection holds up well, and you finish with fresher legs than a firmer, lower-stack racer would leave you.
Stability
This is a neutral shoe, not a stability shoe, so it offers no medial posting or motion control for overpronators. What stability it has comes from the carbon plate and the shape of the platform, which stiffen the ride and stop the foam folding under you on uneven ground. On smoother trail and hardpack it feels planted and confident at speed. On very technical, rocky or root-strewn terrain the tall, plated platform asks more of your ankles and foot strength than a lower, softer shoe would, so it suits a confident, efficient runner more than a cautious one. If you need genuine pronation support, this is not the shoe for you.
Upper & comfort
The upper is light, thin and built for racing rather than luxury. It wraps the foot closely and drains and dries quickly, which matters when you are running through streams or wet grass in a long event. Breathability is good, so your feet stay cool on warm days and through hard efforts. The trade-off with a race-weight upper is that structure and long-term durability take a back seat to weight, so treat it as a shoe you save for fast days and races rather than one you thrash on every muddy training run. The heel hold and midfoot wrap are secure, and there is enough protection up front to take the edge off trail debris without adding bulk.
