The New Balance 880v14 is the definition of a do-everything neutral daily trainer, and that is exactly the point. This is the shoe you reach for on Monday when you just want to run, not think about your shoes. It is not light at 304g and it is not flashy, but it gives you a dependable, cushioned running shoe that soaks up easy miles, marathon-block base runs and the daily commute-jog without complaint. New Balance pitches it against the neutral-daily benchmarks, and it holds its own next to the Brooks Ghost 17 and the Pegasus. The 8mm drop and generous cushioning suit heel and midfoot strikers who want protection over pop. If you want a softer, more premium ride from the same brand, the Fresh Foam X 1080v14 sits a tier up. But for a no-drama workhorse at £140, the 880v14 is an easy shoe to recommend.
The 880v14 fits true to size for most runners, so order your usual New Balance number and you should be fine. The forefoot is medium width with a rounded toe box that gives your toes room to splay on longer runs without feeling sloppy. Midfoot lockdown is secure through a traditional lacing setup, and the heel hold is one of the shoe's quiet strengths: a well-structured heel counter and padded collar keep your foot planted with no slip. If you have a genuinely wide foot, the good news is that New Balance offers the 880v14 in 2E and 4E widths, which is a real advantage over most rivals that only sell a standard fit. Narrow-footed runners may want to lace-lock the heel. We would not size up unless you like extra room at the front or plan to wear thicker winter socks, in which case a half size up works.
The ride here is smooth, steady and predictable rather than exciting. Fresh Foam X gives you a medium-soft landing that leans protective, cushioned enough to take the sting out of pavement but firm enough that you never feel like you are sinking. Transitions are gently guided and the shoe rolls you through the gait cycle without any harsh edges. At 304g it is a substantial shoe, so it feels planted and stable underfoot rather than nimble, and it is happiest cruising at easy to steady paces. Try to push it to tempo and the weight shows: there is no plate, no snap, no rebound to lean on. That is fine. This is a shoe for banking comfortable miles, and over a long run the consistency is genuinely reassuring. What you lose in liveliness you gain in a ride that just keeps giving mile after mile.
Cushioning is the 880v14's headline, and it strikes a sensible middle ground. There is plenty of Fresh Foam X underfoot to protect your legs on daily mileage, but it stops short of the tall, pillowy stack you get from a max-cushion trainer. The result is a ride that feels supportive and grounded rather than soft and wobbly. Your legs stay fresh over 10 to 20 kilometre runs, and the foam holds up well as distances climb. Heel strikers get a well-cushioned landing zone thanks to the 8mm drop, while midfoot runners still get enough under the ball of the foot. It is not the softest daily trainer on the market, and runners chasing plush luxury will want the 1080. But for balanced, all-day comfort that does not turn to mush, the 880v14 gets the mix right.

The 880v14 is a neutral shoe, so it offers no medial post, guide rails or dedicated pronation control. That said, it is one of the more inherently stable neutral trainers you can buy. The moderate stack height keeps you close to the ground, the base is wide and planted, and the firm-ish Fresh Foam X does not collapse or roll under load. For mild overpronators or runners who simply want a secure, no-surprises platform, that natural stability is welcome. If you need genuine motion control or have been prescribed a stability shoe, this is not the answer and you should look at a dedicated stability model instead. But for the large group of neutral runners who just want to feel steady and planted, the 880v14 delivers that without ever advertising it.
The engineered mesh upper is comfortable and unfussy, built for daily reliability rather than head-turning looks. There is enough structure to hold your foot in place and enough give to avoid hot spots on longer efforts. Ventilation is decent for a daily trainer, so your feet stay reasonably cool on warmer runs, though this is not a barely-there summer racer upper. The tongue and collar are sensibly padded, adding to the plush heel hold without feeling bulky, and the whole package plays nicely with the wide-width options. Most runners will find they can lace up and forget about the upper entirely, which is the highest compliment you can pay a workhorse trainer. Break-in is minimal: it feels good from the first run.
