Our verdict

The Novablast 5 is Asics at its most fun: a bouncy, do-it-all daily training shoe that turns easy miles into something you actually look forward to. It sits in the high-stack daily trainer bracket, with an 8mm drop and a springy ride that rewards a relaxed cadence. At 135 pounds RRP and around 255g it is not the lightest in its class, but the energy you get back more than pays for the weight on everyday runs. This is a versatile running shoe rather than a one-trick pony. It will cover recovery jogs, steady long runs and the odd faster session without complaint, even if it is happiest cruising. If you want something firmer and more locked-down for tempo work, the Asics Superblast 2 is the pricier, sharper sibling. But for most runners after one shoe to carry the bulk of their training, the Novablast 5 is an easy shoe to recommend. We rate it as one of the most enjoyable daily trainers you can buy.

Extra information

Fit & sizing

The Novablast 5 fits true to size for most runners, so order your usual Asics size and you should be fine. The forefoot is a touch more generous than older Novablast models, giving your toes room to splay on longer efforts without feeling sloppy. Midfoot lockdown is secure thanks to a snug, slightly stretchy upper, and the heel hold is reliable once you cinch the laces, with no slipping at the back. If you have a wider foot you will likely find the standard width comfortable rather than tight, though true wide-footers may still want to size carefully or look elsewhere. Runners between sizes are best staying true rather than sizing up, since the roomy toe box already buys you space. For sockless or very warm running the interior is smooth enough to avoid hot spots. Overall this is a forgiving, accommodating fit that suits high-volume training where comfort over the miles matters more than a glove-tight race feel.

Performance breakdown

Ride & feel

Soft and bouncy is the headline here. The Novablast 5 has a trampoline-like quality underfoot that springs you forward, and the geometry rolls you through each stride with a smooth, rocking sensation. On easy and steady runs this is where the shoe shines: it stays lively lap after lap and keeps your legs feeling fresh deep into long efforts. Push the pace and it holds up better than you might expect for a soft daily trainer, though it never feels as snappy or planted as a dedicated tempo shoe. The ride is best described as cushioned and cheerful rather than aggressive. You sit on top of a generous slab of foam, so there is a slight wobble at the very edges of your footstrike, but for the steady mileage this shoe is built for, it is a genuinely fun, energetic ride that makes the kilometres tick by.

Cushioning

Cushioning is the Novablast 5's calling card. There is a deep, soft layer of foam underfoot that soaks up impact on easy days and protects your legs over long runs, yet it stays springy rather than mushy, so you still get energy back at toe-off. This is the sweet spot a lot of runners are chasing: protective enough for marathon-distance training blocks and high weekly mileage, but lively enough that you never feel like you are slogging through it. Heavier runners and heel-strikers will appreciate the generous stack soaking up the pounding. The trade-off is that all that soft foam can feel a little unstable if you are tired or running on uneven ground, and it is less precise than a firmer trainer. For its intended job, easy and steady miles, the cushioning balance is excellent.

Stability

This is a neutral running shoe with no medial post or dedicated support features, so if you need motion control or have a history of overpronation you should look at a proper stability shoe such as the Asics GT-2000 14 instead. That said, the Novablast 5 is not a tippy mess for neutral runners. The midsole sidewalls cradle your foot reasonably well and the wide base gives a decent platform underfoot. The soft, tall stack does mean there is a little lateral wobble when you are fatigued or cornering, which is the usual price of a bouncy high-stack trainer. For neutral runners doing the bulk of their training in a straight line, stability is fine. For anyone needing structured support, this is not the shoe.

Upper & comfort

The upper is comfortable and easygoing, built from a soft engineered mesh that breathes well and moulds to your foot without pressure points. The tongue is lightly padded and stays put, and the heel collar has just enough cushioning to lock your ankle without rubbing. Breathability is good, so warm summer runs do not turn into a sweatbox, and the smooth interior is forgiving if you run with thin socks. It is a fairly plush, no-fuss upper that prioritises everyday comfort over a locked-down race feel, which suits the shoe's daily-trainer brief perfectly. Durability looks solid too, with reinforcement in the high-wear areas, so it should hold up across a full training block.

Fun and Bouncy

The Novablast 5 has been one of those shoes that just makes running feel more enjoyable. It's soft, bouncy, and feels light on foot, making it great for everything from easy runs to picking up the pace. The cushioning has plenty of life without feeling unstable, and it's quickly become one of my favourite daily trainers.

Common questions

FAQ

Yes, for most runners the Novablast 5 fits true to size, so order your usual Asics size. The forefoot is a little roomier than older versions, giving your toes space to splay on long runs, while the midfoot and heel stay secure. If you are between sizes, stay true rather than sizing up, since the generous toe box already gives you extra room. Wider feet should find the standard width comfortable enough for daily training.

It is an excellent marathon-training shoe. The deep, bouncy cushioning protects your legs through high-mileage weeks and long runs, and the lively ride keeps easy days enjoyable so you stay consistent. It is happiest at easy and steady paces rather than goal marathon pace, so many runners pair it with a lighter, snappier shoe for race day and faster sessions, while letting the Novablast 5 carry the bulk of the training load.

Yes. The soft, forgiving cushioning, comfortable roomy upper and bouncy ride make it a very welcoming first proper running shoe. The 8mm drop is a familiar, easy-to-adapt geometry, and the generous stack soaks up impact while your body adjusts to running. The only caveat is that it is a neutral shoe, so if you have been told you overpronate or need support, a stability model would be a safer starting point.

Both are bouncy Asics trainers, but they aim at different jobs. The Novablast 5 is your everyday workhorse: softer, cheaper and built for easy and steady mileage. The Superblast 2 is firmer, lighter and more responsive, so it doubles as a long-run and tempo shoe but costs noticeably more. If you want one affordable do-it-all daily trainer, choose the Novablast 5. If you want a faster, more versatile shoe and do not mind paying for it, the Superblast 2 is the pick.

Durability is solid for a daily trainer. The outsole has rubber coverage in the high-wear zones and the upper is reinforced where it counts, so most runners should comfortably get a normal training-shoe lifespan from it across a full block. As with any soft, high-stack foam, the midsole will gradually lose some of its bounce with heavy mileage, but for its price the Novablast 5 holds up well as a reliable everyday option.
