Our verdict

Saucony has since moved on to the Peregrine 16, but the 14 is still an easy trail running shoe to recommend if you can find your size. It's low, flexible and grippy, with a rock plate and deep lugs, the kind of shoe you can take down a muddy bridleway on Saturday and up a rocky path on Sunday. Reviewers liked it. RunRepeat rated it highly for value and versatility, and most testers rated the grip well above average. Not everyone agrees on the wet stuff, though: iRunFar found it only adequate in mud and slippery on wet wooden bridges. The bigger catch is a firmish, fairly thin ride that gets tiring on long days. Think of it as a daily trail shoe rather than an ultra shoe. Fewer UK retailers carry it now that it's been replaced, so check sizes before you get attached.

Key features

  • Deep lugsDig into loose ground and brake well on descents, though one reviewer found them slippery on wet wood and slick rock
  • Rock plateTakes the sting out of sharp stones without making the shoe stiff
  • Low, flexible platformLets you feel the ground and move easily between running and hiking
  • Tougher upperHolds up better than the Peregrine 13's, with no reports of peeling overlays

Extra information

Fit & sizing

Reviewers disagree on width, which is worth knowing before you buy. One called it a medium fit with room for your toes to spread, and lab testing measured a fairly roomy forefoot but found the toe box tapers quickly. Other testers found it narrow in the usual Saucony way. Everyone agrees it's true to length, with a secure heel and midfoot that holds you well on technical ground. If your toes need plenty of space, check whether a wide fit is stocked, or look at the Lone Peak 9, which is built around a wide toe box.

Performance breakdown

Ride & feel

Low, firm and connected. You feel the trail underfoot, which helps you pick a line on a technical descent and is less welcome a few hours in. Reviewers liked how flexible it is and how easily it switches between running and hiking. There isn't much bounce, so it suits steady trail miles more than fast efforts.

Cushioning

Moderate, and firmer than most modern trail shoes. One reviewer described the foam as not too squishy and not too firm, with the removable insole adding some bounce. It's fine for most everyday trail runs. For long days out, a softer shoe like the Speedgoat 6 is kinder on your legs.

Stability

Neutral, with no support features for overpronation. The low platform keeps you close to the ground, so it feels steady on rough, off-camber paths.

Upper & comfort

The upper was one of the main changes from the 13, and it's better for it. The tongue has more padding, and reviewers who'd had overlays peel on the old shoe reported no fraying or splitting on this one. One reviewer found it more durable than an Altra Lone Peak upper.

Great All-Round Trail Shoe

The Peregrine 14 has been a great trail shoe for everything from woodland paths to more technical trails. It feels secure, has loads of grip, and gives you plenty of confidence when the ground gets wet or uneven. It's comfortable straight out of the box, tough enough to handle plenty of miles, and one I'd happily recommend for most trail runners.

Common questions

FAQ

Yes for length. Width is less clear cut: some reviewers found the forefoot roomy, others narrow, and the toes taper either way. If you're between sizes or have wide feet, try one on.

Buy the 14 if it fits and the price gap is worth it to you. It's still a capable shoe, and its £120 RRP was already £10 under the 16's. If you can't find your size, or you'd rather have the current model, the 16 is the easier buy.

Not really. Most reviewers see it as a daily trail shoe. The firm, low cushioning is fine for shorter runs but gets tiring over very long distances, where a more cushioned shoe makes more sense.

Mostly, but reviewers aren't unanimous. Several rated its traction highly across mud, snow and loose ground, while one found it merely adequate in wet mud and slippery on wet wooden bridges. For a very wet British winter on soft ground, a shoe with more aggressive lugs is worth a look.

Better than the 13, at least up top. The reworked upper held up in reviewers' testing without the fraying and peeling overlays that dogged the previous version.
